Rest Is Part of Caring: Why Supporting Carers Matters More Than Ever

Carers Week2026 is a time to recognise, celebrate and support the millions of unpaid carers who play a vital role in communities across the UK.

At Crossroads, we see every day the difference unpaid carers like you make in Hertfordshire – and the challenges you face.

This year’s theme of Building Carer Friendly Communities reminds us of something incredibly important:
rest is not a luxury for carers, it’s essential.

Support is available today

The reality of caring

Behind every caring role is a person giving their time, energy and emotional support to someone they love.

For many carers, this means:

  • Supporting someone round-the-clock

  • Managing complex health needs

  • Balancing work, family life and caring responsibilities

  • Going without regular breaks

Without the right support, this can take a real toll on your wellbeing.

Rest is part of caring, not separate from it

Taking a break isn’t stepping away from caring, it’s what enables you to continue.

Rest can mean different things:

  • A few hours to recharge

  • Time to focus on your own health

  • Space to connect with others

  • The reassurance that your loved one is safe and supported

When you are supported, the person you care for benefits too.

How we support unpaid carers

At Crossroads, our services are designed with you in mind.

Homecare and Carers Breaks respite visits provide flexible breaks, whether planned or urgent.

Our Day Centre services also offer safe, engaging environments for those being cared for in the Stevenage community – giving you peace of mind and time for yourself.

Everything we do is built around:

✔ Flexibility
✔ Trust
✔ Understanding your individual needs

Carers Week 2026

This week, we’ve been out across the community connecting with carers and professionals, raising awareness and sharing support. We’ve certainly been taking part in the Building Carer Friendly Communities theme!

We’ve had the pleasure of attending:

📍 Tesco HQ in Welwyn Garden City on Tuesday – with entertainment from the Rock Choir!

📍 QE2 for the East & North Hertfordshire Hospitals' Charity Supporting Carers event on Wednesday – we loved meeting the Carer Experience Manager and her volunteers!

A huge thank you to everyone who came to chat with us, shared their experiences or helped spread the word.

These conversations really matter, because they help ensure carers know where to turn and remind you that you are not alone.

Looking ahead

Carers Week may only last a few days, but the need for support is ongoing.

Carers deserve recognition.
Carers deserve support.
And carers deserve to rest.

If you or someone you know could benefit from support, we’re here to help.
